[The Prequel to Dinky, the Little Yellow Daffodil]
The tale of the tiny yellow daffodil named Dinky is a beautiful and inspirational story. Dinky teaches me something new
each time I read his story. He has given many people valuable insights into themselves and their lives. Out of nowhere,
the tale of Dinky flowed. Just a few days ago another tale flowed forth, the tale of a little acorn. It is the prequel to the tale of the little yellow daffodil. Enjoy!

Once upon a time ..... there was an
acorn.
"What a splendid view I have! I love being up so nice and
high! Ahhh.. such delicious air! Such beautiful
green grass below! And look at those fluffy clouds... I think I'm going to relax and enjoy the view. I am a well
rounded and formed acorn, my grandpa acorn would be so proud if he could see me
now! Suddenly the little acorn was free falling through the air... He-e-e-l-l-lp.........!!" [PLUNK!!] "Ouch! What the ...?
Where am I? Where's my view? What's this green stuff here? Long skinny leaves? Oh....it's GRASS! ... it looked so much
nicer and softer from my branch so high up, a lovely green carpet on which to imagine lying.
Well, now that I am here.. it's a bit spiky."
"So why was I kicked out of my lovely home
in the sky? I paid my rent didn't I? (He scrunches up his little acorn face
trying to remember...) Oh the mind must be going... I can't remember anything! I can't imagine the branch would have allowed me to stay so long if I
hadn't paid my fair share. I've got a few choice
words to have with that branch! Well now that I have landed on the grass I've always imagined
lying on.. I think I'll roll around and find a comfortable spot and have a
snooze."
So the acorn went off rolling and rolling looking
for the perfect blades of grass to snooze on. Finally he found them, two blades
close together and looking beckoning, so off to dreamland he went. He was
having a sweet dream of still being high floating on the breeze on his branch as
a he felt something wet poking at him. "What's that? Who's there?" he called
out with his eyes still shut. Then suddenly a sharp knife like thing poked at him hard
and he opened his eyes to find himself face to face, or face to snout with a
giant squirrel. A VERY big squirrel. [To an acorn all squirrels are giant.]
"GO AWAY YOU GIANT SQUIRREL! Leave me alone! I am just an innocent acorn
enjoying a snooze. Look I already was booted out of my home in the sky today, I
don't need a rough time from you, you bully you!" The acorn decided if he screamed
loud enough the squirrel would run off like the nasty criminal he was. So he
gathered all his might and let out a ... NOTHING! Nothing! Not one sound.
The acorn was flabbergasted. "I've lost my voice too?" "Oh this is not good", he
thought. "This has got to be one of the worst days of my life!"
The little acorn began to cry. He did not want to
have his life end in the jaws of a giant squirrel. Then suddenly the squirrel sat upright and dropped
the acorn. "My tears frightened him! Maybe he has never seen an acorn
cry?" Indeed the squirrel was a bit frightened by the 2 droplets of water that
leaked out of the acorn he was eagerly attacking. The squirrel backed up and
stared at the acorn, then made some chattering sound and turned and ran off.
The acorn rejoiced! He thought of his favorite dream, about a
little yellow daffodil sheltered and loved by a big oak tree. This little
yellow daffodil lived longer than any other daffodil and had become famous.
"Maybe I can become famous too!" thought the acorn. "I too will live the
longest and be beloved!" And every day as the people walked by and the children
came out to the field to play the little acorn sat up as tall and straight as he
could, but alas no one saw him. He was brown and small and buried within the
blades of grass. He knew he'd have to relocate. "Yes, that's the answer! I"ll relocate." he
thought. So the little brown acorn set off to roll and roll and roll to a
better location where he would be seen beyond the tall grass blades.
Exhausted, days later he finally arrived on a nice
large area of brown dirt. No grass to obstruct and hide him. He'd solicited the
help of the cat with the sparkly collar to bat him part of the way. Even though the cat was a bit rough, he was grateful, he was able to cross 10 feet with the help
of that cat. "Now I'll be discovered! Now I'll be praised and loved! Now I'll
be famous!", he thought. So the little acorn sat and sat and sat and sat. Not one person
saw him. Several squirrels made attempts to make a meal of the little acorn but as before he shed tears and again the squirrels dropped him and scurried off. The air
was getting so cool and the leaves were falling off of the giant oak and the
other trees. "I hope they don't fall on me! I'll never be discovered under a
pile of leaves!" But the acorn was far enough away from the mighty oak so no
leaves fell on him.
He passed his days being the best acorn he could be hoping he
would be discovered and become beloved by the townspeople and have his picture in all the newspapers. Suddenly he heard a
voice... big and booming... it was the oak! "Son, what are you doing all the
way over there! You must have worked hard to get so far!" The acorn spun about
and looked at the oak and replied "Yes, I have. I have come here so that I will
become beloved like the little daffodil! I will be famous and in all the newspapers too!"
The oak smiled, not really sure what famous daffodil the acorn was referring
to. "Yes you will.", said the oak, always one to encourage and love. The acorn
glowed with acorn joy. "You actually have given yourself a very special
opportunity that most acorns don't get" "Oh?" replied the acorn, "to be loved and famous
like the daffodil?" "You will be loved and famous, but not like the daffodil, but
in your own way. Most acorns fall underneath me and get buried by the leaves I
drop, or they get eaten by the squirrels. You have figured out that the
squirrels don't like acorns that are leaking drops of water so you have
survived." The acorn smiled proudly. "Yes, I am smart and strong! I have
survived!" The oak continued, "you now have the opportunity to accomplish the
highest mission an acorn can accomplish. I am proud to call you my son!" The
acorn blinked and wondered what was the highest mission an acorn could
accomplish. The oak was silent and the acorn thought and thought and thought
but could not get an answer. He was still living from his acorn consciousness so he could not see the forest vision of the mighty oak within.
The days passed and he still had not been
discovered, not gotten famous or even noticed except by a passing squirrel or
two who ran off as soon as he leaked a few tears. He still had no idea what an
acorn's highest mission was, but he was very happy that he was going to accomplish it. He
slept happy each night on the moist brown dirt and sniffed lovingly at the
crisp fall air each day. He listened to the plunk plunk plunk of his fellow
acorns as they hit the ground one by one. They, however were underneath the
mighty oak and soon were covered by the oak's blanket of leaves. "They won't be
discovered under there that's for sure, but they will be protected and warm
throughout the winter.", he observed cheerfully.
As the days passed the acorn began to feel funny, he felt like
something was changing inside of him, like he was undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts.
He didn't know what this feeling was so he just tried not to think about it.
Cold rains had fallen and the ground was very wet and he found himself sinking
into the wet dirt. It felt lovely and nice as he drifted off to sleep. The
acorn awoke to discover that he was no longer sitting on top of the soil, but had sunk into the ground. "OH NO!" he cried, "I'll never be discovered down here!" So he began to
plot his escape to the surface .... before he could execute his plan, the funny
feeling inside overtook him and he felt his body begi n to dissolve. He cried, his body
was failing him when he needed it most. To die under the earth, what a
humiliating death for an acorn, he thought. He had failed. He had failed at being discovered
and he had not figured out what the greatest mission an acorn
could accomplish was. He was sorrowful he had failed at the greatest mission an
acorn could accomplish. He did not do as the big oak had predicted. And now he could do nothing about it. He was very sad. Each day his
body decayed and fell apart a little more until there was nothing much left of
him. He sent his goodbyes to all of his acorn friends, his loving branch
home and his big mighty oak father and then he closed his eyes and drifted off to
where it is that acorns go when they depart their acorn life.
Decades later the little children went on picnics with
their families and played with each other in the big grassy field. The dogs frolicked and
barked and the cats chased the squirrels and chipmunks across the grass and
up the trees. And over all these fun proceedings a grand oak watched smiling. He
was a tall and strong oak with dark brown bark and a wide canopy of leaves. He
was the children's favorite tree because he was just the perfect size for climbing and they loved to play hide and seek behind his thick trunk. His branches held
lots of acorns this year and that made him proud. It was the first year ever he had
produced acorns and he displayed a good crop. As he thought proudly of his
acorn crop something in his distant memory began to stir. Something about living as an acorn perhaps? The handsome oak laughed to himself, "I wonder where
that came from! An acorn? Me? I am a mighty oak of 25 years, I hardly think my
life's memory would be that of an acorn!" Then another thought appeared and
he thought he heard his papa oak saying something... something about the
"greatest mission an acorn could accomplish". He shook
his branches bewildered. He had no idea what that could be and he hoped that
his own acorns would be able to accomplish this great mission.
Contented and
happy, the oak tree proceeded to soak up the sun and strengthen his acorns while
playing hide and seek with the laughing children. 'I am a mighty oak and I shall continue to keep the townspeople happy
and cool with the shade I provide." He was happy and enjoyed his days with the townspeople. Suddenly there way down on the ground underneath him ... he
noticed something tiny,
something yellow. It was a daffodil and it was drooping very sadly. A single
daffodil.
Dinky began to droop his beautiful yellow petals.
His stem hung over and he looked dreadfully sad. Suddenly, the big oak called
down to him, startling the little daffodil. "Whoa there little yellow flower,
why so gloomy? Don't you realize how very special you are?" Dinky straightened
his stem and looked right up at the very, tall and big oak towering above him
and said plainly. "No, I don't feel special at all!" "You don't?" replied the
stunned oak tree. "Nope, not one bit" said a gloomy Dinky. "Well, little
fellow, do you think I'd choose ANY daffodil to shelter and protect with my
loving branches?"
The mighty oak spent his days sheltering and protecting
Dinky, the little yellow daffodil. And because he did, Dinky lived longer than any daffodil ever lived and they both became known far and wide. They were
in all the papers. The dream the little acorn had so many years ago had
been about himself! As he transformed into the mighty oak and expressed forest consciousness, he
accomplished the greatest mission an acorn could accomplish and more.
